As of October 6, 1996, Hospital Lemera was the first to be attacked by rebel forces then ordered by Mr. Kabila, thus inaugurating the beginning of the war that led him to Kinshasa in a few months.

A dozen pregnant women, several patients who could not move from their beds and several medical staff were cowardly and brutally killed. All properties of the hospital including the stock of medications  were destroyed.

Héritiers de la Justice  reminds us that before its destruction, Lemera Hospital was equipped with modern facilities, highly qualified staff and a budget in excess of 2 million U.S. dollars. Without doubt this Hospital was one of the largest in the Congo.

It had a capacity of 300 beds, a dozen doctors, hundreds of workers and community support out of the ordinary. Its facilities for surgery, radiology and maternity were said to be among the best in the Congo. This hospital served more than 1 million people

You'll find information on this site explaining why we are urging the Congolese Government to immediately rehabilitate the hospital and how you can join the campaign

Despite the Geneva Conventions prohibit attacks on hospitals and medical staff, Lemera hospital  was destroyed completely without any justification.

This simply because Laurent Desire Kabila decided to use it as a launching site of the war that brought him to power.

However, since then, the hospital has never been rehabilitated. We therefore urge the Congolese Government to take its responsibility to rehabilitate the hospital urgently.
